Second Family Member Dies of Crash Injuries
Phoenix—A second member of the Ignacio Hernandez family of Casa Grande died in a Phoenix hospital Monday afternoon, about 36 hours after his mother, died in a traffic accident near Buckeye early Sunday.

Officials at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix said Ignacio Hernandez Jr., 22, died at 2 p.m. of “massive injuries” suffered in the accident.

Dora Hernandez and Ignacio Jr., are two of five family members who were involved in the head-on collision about 3 a.m. on the Brenda cut-off bear Buckeye, about 16 miles east of Tonapah.

Three other family members are still at Maricopa County Hospital, officials there said.

Ignacio Hernandez, driver of a pickup truck which the family was driving to Lompoc, Calif., is still in the hospital intensive care unit in guarded condition.

Still in fair condition in the hospital’s pediatric wing is 10-year-old Sammy Hernandez who suffered two broken legs in the crash.

Adela Garza, 24, a married daughter of the Hernandez couple, is in good condition in a patient room at the hospital, officials said.

The driver of the other pickup trick, which Highway Patrolman said, failed to negotiate a curve on the road and collided with the Hernandez pickup, is still in Maryvale Hospital in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Thomas J. Perry, 19, of Buckeye, is in guarded condition at the hospital “but improving,” officials said.

Meanwhile, C.L. and Celia Pearson, owners of the Little Sombrero restaurant at 419 E. Florence Blvd., said today that they are initiating a fund to help defray medical and other expenses to the Hernandez family.

Two of the Hernandez children Mike and Charles, work at the restaurant, Mrs. Pearson said. There are nine children in the family, five of them still at their home at 1112 E. 1st St.

The fund will be used to help defray medical costs and other expenses, including the cost of funerals for Mrs. Hernandez and Ignacio Jr.

Donations can be brought to the restaurant or mailed to the Pearson home at 517 W. 10th St.

Recitation of Rosary will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church for Mrs. Dora Menchaca Hernandez and her son, Ignacio M. Jr., victims of a two-car collision Sunday near Tonapah on Interstate 10. Mrs. Hernandez, 45, died Sunday. Ignacio Jr. died Monday in St. Joseph Hospital, Phoenix.
